Don't ask me about Tennis!

was talking about a few different things with a training buddy of mine and we stumbled across this concept. Here it goes: I played tennis when I was in high school. I was on the team and was an average player. With that being said, I enjoyed tennis. I enjoyed playing, watching and talking about tennis. I knew what racquets were the best and could argue why. I knew the shoes and what outfits to wear. With that being said, I have only played tennis a few times since and still have the racquet I played with in high school (20 years ago). While I still like and enjoy tennis, I know very little about it. I have lost the ability to play at any capacity and while I could still "hit" back and forth, I am not the player I used to be. With that being the case, I don't go around advising people how to play tennis or what equipment they should buy. I honestly don't have a clue. That is not necessarily a bad thing, it's just no longer my field/hobby/interest. I find the same true in other areas of my life. I think there are people out there advising about activities/sports/health/injures among others that don't really have any business doing that. In my field of sports chiropractic in Cedar Park, Texas I see a lot of this. I will have a person come in complaining about pain while running and now their back, knee, neck, hamstring or whatever is hurting. Most people will tell me that they heard _____________ (fill in about any answer) and this is not working. While it doesn't surprise me, it has led me to discuss this concept with many of my friends. I think we need to take expert advice from the experts. Pretty simple concept, yet often forgotten. I am always working on improving my triathlon skills. My most recent improvements have come through running. I have lots of running friends. I can call on many people, but here is what I choose to do. Instead of calling someone who ran track 20 years ago, I call a friend of mine who won a half marathon this year beating about 8000 people. This guy can move. He is at a level most people will never reach, but he can give me ideas and concepts along with advice on how to improve where I am personally at. He gives me valuable advice on how I can push myself to the next level. What he tells me is current, relevant and works. That's the kind of advice I/we need to be able to succeed. I love the way Dave Ramsey puts it " If you want fiancial advice, don't call your broke brother-in-law." It's a simple statement that speaks volumes. We need to get advice from people who are at a level above us, not below us. I think this concept works in all areas of our life. We need to look for advice on many topics including spiritual, financial, health, marriage, parenting, business and many others. Remember to take advice from those that care about you. So if you want advice about sports injury, back pain or headaches, call me. Advice about tennis? Call someone else.

Active Release and Your Health Goals

I am excited to be doing Active Release in the spine now. I have been seeing a lot more ART clients/patients who have been benefiting from the care. That's was makes what I do, more fun.

How are you goals from a health standpoint going. When we hit the March/April timeframe, it is a great time to see if we are achieving our fitness goals. We need to assess our body fat, our weight and how we are holding up from a cardiovascular stand point. How are you doing with your weights in the gym? These are great areas to actually measure against the goals we made a few months ago. Look at them and make adjustments as necessary.

Excited about the newest aquathon series in the Austin area. Pfive-5-5 series is set to begin on 4/5/2011 and we will be there to support it. Stop by and say hello at Lake Pflugerville.

I never stop learning..........

I always remembering in high school that I couldn't wait to get out. Then I decided to go to college and couldn't wait to get out. Then I went to chiropractic school and yep, I couldn't wait to get out. Now, after leaving school almost 12 years ago, I am still learning. At my clinic in Cedar Park, Texas I still have learning to do. I just recently added Active Release Technique to my list of certifications I have. The reason? I want to offer the best care that I can. Although, I wanted to be done with school, my desire to help out the athletes in my area has kept me continuing my pursuit of more knowledge and skill. So until I get it all down..... I will keep on...

ART aka Active Release Technique

So I am leaving today to travel to Las Vegas for a training trip. I know you are thinking I am going to have fun, and I will, but I won't be in a casino. I am training this weekend for Active Release Technique also known as ART. I have been interested in the technique for some time, but have just now had the opportunity to take the class/clinic. I am pretty excited. I will be learning all of the lower extremity protocols and how to implement them on my current and new patients in the Cedar Park and Leander Texas are. As a chiropractor, I continually focus on how I can provide excellent care for my patients and athletes that I treat. I feel ART will help me continue in that model and help me fix more people. To me, that makes for an exciting weekend. I will keep you posted......

Helping out athletes

As a Cedar Park Chiropractor, I really enjoy helping out as many people as I can. Lately, due to my training in Graston Technique, I have seen a large influx of athletes and student athletes. Their sports injuries are slowing them down and they are coming in to the clinic to get better. I am really enjoying helping them return to what they are doing as soon as possible. That is a great part of my job.

Also, really excited about the end of the triathlon season. It means that several friends and patients are participating in Ironmans this month. We have IM Arizona, IM Florida and IM Cozumel in November alone. Excited to see what is to come.

Getting Rest

I think as someone who thinks about physical exertion on a regular basis, I have been giving a lot of thought into rest. Many of my chiropractic patients in Cedar Park and Leander ask me about this. It is pretty simple knowledge that athletes know our muscles grow, not during exercise, but during rest. We know that getting the rest we need is necessary (we say we know anyway), but do we really rest? We should, we need to, but sometimes don't want to.

Here are some ideas to help us rest:

1)Getting a full nights sleep - This means getting 8 hours of uninterrupted rest.

2)Alternating our workouts so that we get recovery days - This means we must challenge the body with heavy days, but must allow the body to rest after these hard days.

3)Listening to our body - Sometimes we may begin to exercise but just feel like we can't. I am not talking about not into it, but our body just isn't feeling it. This is a great time to back off and ditch a workout.

Taking the time to rest and listen to our bodies is a great way to actually improve our athletic performance as well as preventing injuries.

A press release I submitted on 03/08/2010

We have been recently informed by several major insurance companies that non-surgical spinal decompression is being covered by health insurance. “This is very exciting news for our patients. Now, we are able to help people with a great therapy that has already helped many people in Cedar Park and Leander, Texas but now we will be able to help many more that have insurance coverage available” stated John Tuggle, D.C. Chiropractor at Wellness & Better Health Chiropractic.
Non-surgical spinal decompression had been used for many years in helping alleviate neck and low back pain associated with disc bulges, disc herniations as well as chronic back pain that have not been helped by other non invasive procedures. The machine used at Wellness & Better Health Chiropractic is a Triton DTS unit made by Chattanooga Systems that has been producing therapy equipment for over 60 years and is considered the industry leader.
Dr. Tuggle stated “ We began using DTS in 2006 in addition to our standard chiropractic therapies and felt it would compliment everything that we had been doing, but would continue to help improve patients that no longer improved from chiropractic or physical therapy. DTS is used by orthopedic surgeons, pain management doctors and chiropractors alike. We really enjoy being able to help people return to the activities they love and now with some insurance companies covering the therapy as it is becoming more integrated into our healthcare model it is definitively a win-win.”
Dr. Tuggle has been practicing gentle chiropractic care in the Austin, Cedar Park and Leander area since 2001 and focuses his care on chronic problems and sports related injuries. He is certified in Graston Technique. Dr. Tuggle re-iterated that DTS therapy is not covered by all insurance companies, but a quick call to his office would determine if a patient’s insurance would cover this treatment.
